The phrase " Jack of all trades, master of none " is used in reference to a person who has gained many skills but he is not competent at any of them. Here, “Jack” refers to common person and “of all trades” tells us that the person can perform various tasks. Initially, the phrase was only “ A jack of all trades ” which was used as a complement for a person who is good at fixing things and also had a good level of knowledge. In the18 th century the other part that is: “ master of none ” was added. There is a clear line between a generalist and an expert or a specialist. Generalist refers to a person who has mastered many skills and he is able to bring the things together in a practical manner. Specialist or expert refers to a person who mastered a particular thing and he has a deep knowledge in that field. The phrase "Jack of all trades" refers to 'Generalist'.
