Jack of all trades, master of none and it's relevancy in tech industry.

The phrase "Jack of all trades, master of none" is used in reference to a person who has gained many skills but he is not competent at any of them. Here, “Jack” refers to common person and “of all trades” tells us that the person can perform various tasks. Initially, the phrase was only “A jack of all trades” which was used as a complement for a person who is good at fixing things and also had a good level of knowledge. In the18th century the other part that is: “master of none” was added.  There is a clear line between a generalist and an expert or a specialist. Generalist refers to a person who has mastered many skills and he is able to bring the things together in a practical manner. Specialist or expert refers to a person who mastered a particular thing and he has a deep knowledge in that field. The phrase "Jack of all trades" refers to 'Generalist'.

It is helpful and parlous at the same time. It is helpful because if you have multiple skills then you are open to almost every field of your skill, whether it is of our interest or it is the necessity of the society or world. Dr. Donna Oriowo says: “Pivot became a buzzword in 2020 for many people.” To pivot is to make a significant business change intended to help recover from or survive a tough period and factors which make the old business model unsustainable. In the business field those who were capable to make a change in their business they are surviving, but many small businesses are closed because they were not able to make a change. Being a generalist makes us a quick study too because we are constantly learning and improving ourselves.

Talking to its relevancy in the tech industry, in the current scenario it is very much relevant. For proving it, I am taking example to two students, the first student who has interest in doing Python and Machine learning and the second student who is doing coding in C, C++, Java and Python together. At the end the first guy might have better and deep knowledge in Python, AI & ML but he will have scope in python only but it might also happen that he will be the demanding person in his field and also might get a better financial package. Coming to the second guy, he will have a very vast field but it may not be possible that he will be demanded as like the first student. Also, he might not get that much financial package. Also, in current meta, many companies or projects require expertise and in-depth knowledge in one or more than one area. As for example, taking example of full-stack developers they require a deep expertise and knowledge in front end development like HTML, CSS, Java Script, React and in back-end development we need to have deep knowledge in Node.js, etc. Also, we need to learn various databases, version control and deployment, DevOps, etc.  Also, the founders and CEOs are a kind of generalist as they need to have a high-level understanding of multiple fields. Talking about the founders, they are the prime example of the “Jack of all trades” mentality. Hence, in the initial days, he will think to expand his company so that he can get the funding easily which will help him to heir more people and the company will start growing.

While in case of specialist or experts, in current scenario, they are so much valuable in the areas like data science, AI & ML, Cybersecurity. It needs a very deep expertise and understanding in this segment. And specialists are also important for a company to make it grow, for example the HR of a company who is responsible for supporting both the employees and the company by ensuring that human capital is managed effectively and fairly. So, specialists are also necessary for a company to run it smoothly.

The overall example for the phrase “Jack of all trades, master of none” is Physics Wallah. As per name it is an ed-tech company whose growth was faster. It’s founder Alakh Pandey has a fanbase that he gained on his hard work, and that was the reason for his company’s sudden growth. After releasing their JEE and NEET courses, they released other competitive exams courses but very rarely we see any top rankers from Physics Wallah and it is the thing why it proves the phrase “Jack of all trades, master of none”, like they have many in many segments of competitive exams but currently they mastered none of them.

At last, I would like to tell that the combination of generalist and specialist allows to create a balance and smooth business, which will be necessary for the company too to be relevant according to the time. In a world where both depth and breadth of knowledge are essential, the modern “Jack of all trades” might just be the master of the future.
